Are you settling?

Published by Karie Millspaugh on

greater-thingsGuys…this is a tough one for me to write, because it  borders between being content or comfortable to being truly satisfied.
I love the story of the ducks swimming in a puddle that was created by a recent rainstorm.  What’s better than imagining ducks playing and splashing in water is seeing the bigger view of them not knowing that there is a great big gorgeous pond just on the other side of the hill where they could swim and swim….They are most likely thinking that they’ve got it made in that little puddle, while they are missing out on a beautiful swim in the great big blue waters of life!
What is it about our human behavior that we think ..where we are currently, whether it’s a job, home or a relationship is as good as it gets?  Do you have something great now that if you had not let go of the average or just “good”, you would have never achieved or received the “great”?  Looking back at my life, when I first ventured out on my own as a young 19 year old I thought that one of my first apartments was the best thing ever!  Then my lease was up in a year and the next apartment was overlooking a pond and huge willow trees.  Then I thought to myself… no…this is as good as it gets!  Then my new husband and I bought our first home at the age of 22… then I thought to myself…wow! I’ve really made it!  4 Big bedrooms, high cathedral ceilings with a beautiful fireplace.  This is …AWESOME!  What about your career or your current love life?  Is it awesome?  Are you excited to get out of bed everyday to embrace your next challenge at work or your next vacation with your partner?  Or are you just “meh” comfortable… ?

This my friend is a sign of settling for less.  You deserve to have a rock star life!  You deserve to have a career that entices you and challenges you mentally along with bringing you joy.  You deserve a relationship that brings you fireworks and the tingle of butterflies every time you see one another.  I’m not trying to create an audience that divorces their spouse or quits their job. I just want to increase your awareness.

Formula for change: You first need to feel a serious dissatisfaction…   Generally we don’t do any adjustments in our lives until we have a huge shift that usually involves pain.  For example a health scare usually wakes a person up to eating right and exercising.  A job loss encourages you to start that business that you’ve always dreamed about.  A divorce or break up startles you enough to either make some necessary changes or live and learn.  These are all examples of life instances that force you to make a change.  Lets look at the overall picture of where you want to increase your energy to creating that shift without being knocked off your rocker.

First you need to realize your self worth.  Why are you settling for less than awesome?  Why have you stayed in the exact same job for multiple years without any mention of a raise or change in position?  I believe that if you are not growing- you are dying.  Why are you tolerating a relationship that is just “ok”?  What about those last 10lbs that you may want to lose? Why have you stopped before the finish line?

When we settle- it’s a mindset of scarcity, not abundance.  You stay with the wrong partner because you feel that he/she are as good as it gets.  You stay in the dead end job because you’ve believed the hype on the street that there aren’t any better ones out there. This is not viewing the world with an abundant mindset.

Do yourself a favor – starting today.  With thinking how abundant the world truly is, in all areas of your life.  Opportunity is everywhere if you open your mind and eyes to it.

Can you imagine how different the world would be if we all viewed life abundantly?  It would raise the bar much higher and the world would live one heck of an exciting life!

Tell me what shifts in your life today with this new way of thinking by leaving your comments below.  I love hearing from each of you!

Love, peace and gratitude!
